My psychiatrist, who helps manage my bipolar 2 disorder, says that I am writing this book partially to find a way to explain the violence I went through. Memories resurface about the two times I was nearly murdered. I experience them as if dreaming. A memory came back today of when I was nine months pregnant and hurt so badly that I ran away to try and have my baby somehow, somewhere else...but I went back home that night.
I think my life's work as a writer is to pull light from these shadows. I am not afraid to look at evil, nor to run from it.
My name is Joan McMillan and this blog is, as Emily Dickinson says, "my letter to the world." I am currently working on a nonfiction book about the murder of a young woman, Asha Veil, born Joanna Dragunowicz, and her unborn daughter, Anina, on September 9, 2006. My book is meant to honor her life and illuminate the need to create a safer world for women and children.
