Ms. Strega has been out in the dampish garden today, defoliating blackspotted rose leaves off the many bushes (my roses are: Bella Roma, Aromatherapy, Angel Wings, Pink Peace, Blaze, Mr. Lincoln, Dream Cloud, Elena, and two unknown miniatures, as well as cuttings this year from Paul's Scarlet Climber and a mystery rose). Black spot is one of the nastiest rose diseases and I've had it devastate roses before. So, I sprayed everything with Safer, disposed of the nasty leaves in the trash, well away from the rosebushes, and am praying for the best.
Seeds I have planted so far: poppies, sweet peas (lots of different varieties, including a red one called Lipstick), moonflowers (for attracting bats), zinnias, larkspur, Chinese blue delphiniums, and ruffled pansies. I hope they come up. I'm trying to get the whole garden sown in one week--the rains have made the flower-planting schedule go a bit wacko. But plant I must.
My name is Joan McMillan and this blog is, as Emily Dickinson says, "my letter to the world." I am currently working on a nonfiction book about the murder of a young woman, Asha Veil, born Joanna Dragunowicz, and her unborn daughter, Anina, on September 9, 2006. My book is meant to honor her life and illuminate the need to create a safer world for women and children.
