Today is my 48th birthday!
I really love this latter part of my forties; this decade has been one of the very best of my whole life. I'm glad I have always resisted the idea that because I am getting older, I'm some sort of throwaway. I feel better, more physically fit, stronger, and healthier as time goes on, not less so, and I wager a lot of people feel like this, too.
We're probably going to have a quieter celebration tonight at home, because I have to take a dance class tonight I've paid for in advance, but which got canceled last week and rescheduled. BUT--I can't think of anything much better than dressing in my bellydance gear and sharing a class with women who are my friends, and also with my daughter Prada, who is dropping into the class tonight.
I have theory that everything you eat on your birthday has no calories, too. Hey, there's something to be said for magical thinking--my life is blessed because of it!
My name is Joan McMillan and this blog is, as Emily Dickinson says, "my letter to the world." I am currently working on a nonfiction book about the murder of a young woman, Asha Veil, born Joanna Dragunowicz, and her unborn daughter, Anina, on September 9, 2006. My book is meant to honor her life and illuminate the need to create a safer world for women and children.

A very happy birthday, Ms. Strega!
One thing I loved about the MFA program, as opposed to my undergrad work, was the variety of ages and voices that were in my classes which always had difference perspectives because of the wide-ranging experiences.
I've always appreciated your voice in particular, both in person and on the page. I hope you have another 48 years to add to your experiences and another 48 years of expressing yourself so wonderfully.
Happy Birthday to You! There is a SF Chronicle blog post that has elicited comments from the pink umbrella man: http://tinyurl.com/2a8oqc . Oh, and there's obBellyDance content, too! :)
Happy belated!
I find my 40's to be very rich, and complex, and sad (loss of parents) and wonderful (more wisdom & curiosity).
Thank you all, and thank you for being my friends!!!
