I've been having a hard time writing in the past few days because I am very sad about
my friend Maude. It is so hard for me to believe she is gone. The next poem I write will be the first one since I was twenty-four that she has not seen.
The link is to another Sentinel article on Maudie, with another picture of her.
I dreamed of Maudie night before last, sitting at a table, reading a new poem very enthusiastically--but she was gray, as if from a black-and-white movie. She did let
me know it was good to be out of her body, which had been giving her a lot of trouble.
At any rate, if you didn't know this wonderful woman or her writing, do pick up a book of hers at some point. You won't regret it. I was deeply privileged to have her in my life for so long, though I am as sad now as when I was a child and lost my beloved grandmother.
My name is Joan McMillan and this blog is, as Emily Dickinson says, "my letter to the world." I am currently working on a nonfiction book about the murder of a young woman, Asha Veil, born Joanna Dragunowicz, and her unborn daughter, Anina, on September 9, 2006. My book is meant to honor her life and illuminate the need to create a safer world for women and children.
