Why I Quit Nanowrimo

This year, I made the decision to quit nanowrimo (National Novel Writing Month), even though technically I am still ahead. It's got a few reasons playing into it, but really, it's simply not fun at all this year. Last year was a blast and this year sucks. That's pretty much all there is to it. The book I'm writing is actually quite good, but it's not one of those books that can be sped through in a month. Trying to force things is just causing worse writer's block for me. So no more of this. I need to be working and revising the novel I wrote last year, and otherwise attending to my creative life, but not in this particular way. Last year it was fun; this year it sucks, and that's the bottom line. I have been writing this year much more shadowy material than last, and in this time when I am recovering from my ordeal over the summer, I just can't blast through everything, and I don't have two hours to spend tapping basically endless ditherings and feel good about the month I spent doing it. I'm not laying this novel aside; I'm just going to start it over and do it right.

Part of living a creative life really does sometimes involve saying no or finding a different path. I do think nanowrimo can be valuable for some folks, but it's a dud this year for me.

I did get a skeleton mask from Oaxaca out of it, so it's not all bad. Just the writing!! :)

On to journaling and working on poems and writing that I actually like and enjoy.

Yay!
