The killings in Santa Barbara have laid a blanket of heartsickness over my day. This young man, before murdering, raged at women and called them sluts.
Most people who are into that sort of ideology think that a woman who has so much as thought about sex is a slut. Believe me, I sadly have firsthand experience with that. I believe that my sexual assault solidified that opinion of me...besides, I was told I brought it on myself.
I did not. Anyone who thinks otherwise is squarely on the side of the perpetrator.
This young man involved in the killings was clearly sick and deranged. It is a sickening tragedy and brings to light so much evil and sickness in this world.
Sadly and with a heavy heart, that is all I have to say.
My name is Joan McMillan and this blog is, as Emily Dickinson says, "my letter to the world." I am currently working on a nonfiction book about the murder of a young woman, Asha Veil, born Joanna Dragunowicz, and her unborn daughter, Anina, on September 9, 2006. My book is meant to honor her life and illuminate the need to create a safer world for women and children.
