This is not a very good picture of my buddy Robert the Umbrella Guy of Santa Cruz. He has a very nice smile, is pleasant to all, and brightens up these gloomy days considerably! Robert dresses all in pink (my favorite part of his outfit is the Tweety Bird umbrella with the blinking red light on the tip) and traipses (very slowly, a baby step at a time) up and down the Pacific Garden Mall. I have been saying hello to him for ages. Whenever I am sitting in the window seat of Peets (one of my favorite places to write my Morning Pages, if there's room), if Robert happens to be passing by, he always turns towards me to give me a wave and a big smile. It's very hard to be down in the dumps when he's around. So thanks, Robert, and long may you walk!
By the way, the aqua band of color above Robert and the blooming cherry tree is called"blue sky." The luminescence in the picture is rumored to be "sunlight." I
seem to recall such things back when I was a youngun.
Speaking of umbrellas and rain, my own umbrellas seem to be migrating away.
I am left with my ancient blue umbrella, with the carved wooden duck handle.
I also recently discovered that my red raincoat is gone. It did make me look
like a hooded, walking tomato, but still...guess it's time to get another, as
the rain doesn't seem to be letting up. We've even had a spate of mini-power-failures.
Guess it's time to go to bed and dream of sunshine!

I love this guy! When Annie and I moved away from Santa Cruz, he used to wear men's clothes. When we came back, he was in women's clothes. Annie said, "Santa Cruz has changed--or maybe not!" Then another time we visited and he was all in pink. He looks like he's doing walking meditation and a performace simultaneously. He always makes me smile.
Hi, Kate--nice to hear from you!
Yes, Robert has gone through a lot
of transformations. He really is
a sweet person. I didn't see him
for a couple of days during the rainy
weather (rumor has it that he does not
walk in the rain, ironically, despite
the umbrella), but then I saw him on his walk. He just won a Goldie from
the Good Times for best street performer! take care, Joan
