My name is Joan McMillan and this blog is, as Emily Dickinson says, "my letter to the world." I am currently working on a nonfiction book about the murder of a young woman, Asha Veil, born Joanna Dragunowicz, and her unborn daughter, Anina, on September 9, 2006. My book is meant to honor her life and illuminate the need to create a safer world for women and children.

Maude Meehan--article in the Sentinel
Here is an article from our local paper (the Santa Cruz Sentinel) on my friend Maude Meehan. Unbelievable that her voice is now silenced, but she truly has left a tremendous legacy in countless ways.

Ms. Strega ~
in observance of your loss, I offer this piece and peace.

I am I do
Joyously embraced; I am
Traversing timeless energies; I do
Unbridled of corporeal restraints; I am
Departing yet remaining; I do
Journeying celestial winds; I am
Celebrating the next; I do
Emitting quintessence of self, I am;
Embracing a wondrous odyssey, I do
All this; I am
All this; I do
All this; and more
All this, and more
k.m.m.
the essence of Maude will forever be "Emitting quintessence of self" while she lives in memories.

I had no idea. So sad. I saw her not too long ago, it seems--we were both in the audience at a reading at BSSC.
A huge loss. She gave so much.
