I wanted to express belated condolences and sympathy concerning the Minneapolis bridge collapse. I have only been to Minneapolis a couple of times, but had universally good experiences there. I remember how horrifying the freeway collapse was during the 1989 Loma Prieta quake, as well as the destruction to the Bay Bridge. On a small scale, over a year ago, our road out of where I live in Felton collapsed into the creek suddenly during a storm; I actually drove over it about an hour before it was declared unsafe to drive over. I cannot imagine how terrifying it would be to experience a bridge collapsing.
I heard today that many cities are rushing to inspect bridges. I think this is a good and extremely timely idea. Maybe another tragedy like this one can be averted.

My name is Joan McMillan and this blog is, as Emily Dickinson says, "my letter to the world." I am currently working on a nonfiction book about the murder of a young woman, Asha Veil, born Joanna Dragunowicz, and her unborn daughter, Anina, on September 9, 2006. My book is meant to honor her life and illuminate the need to create a safer world for women and children.
