Dearest faithful readers, I wanted to let you know that I just heard news of one of my closest friends in the world's passing away. I do not know if the family has announced this person's death yet--this person was very much a prominent figure in our literary scene here in Santa Cruz--and I am in utter shock and even denial myself, so I will not say who this person is just yet, until the family announces it.
As soon as I feel I am able, I will post about it, but it many take me a day or two. I have been dreading this day for as long as I have known this person, one of those friends one simply can't imagine losing.
My name is Joan McMillan and this blog is, as Emily Dickinson says, "my letter to the world." I am currently working on a nonfiction book about the murder of a young woman, Asha Veil, born Joanna Dragunowicz, and her unborn daughter, Anina, on September 9, 2006. My book is meant to honor her life and illuminate the need to create a safer world for women and children.
