Tonight I have a bellydance show with my troupe, Dancers of the Crescent Moon, at our local "venue", Don Quixote, a music hall, restaurant, bar sort of place.
This show is significant to me because I was sexually assaulted (groped) at DonQ three years ago, which sent me into a profound tailspin. It did not help that so many around me at the time had such severe issues regarding sexual abuse, and I cannot to this day believe that basic human decency exists in people who suggested that somehow I was to blame. I am glad that particular population no longer has a place in my life (perhaps if they decided to exit that medieval thinking, I might consider otherwise, but til then, I choose decent people nowadays). I am worthy of being treated well. No one should have to plead with someone to treat them with love after such a terrible thing. I am glad I no longer have to be in that environment ever again, though my prayers for them are always for enlightenment.
The person who hurt me three years ago was sick. I did nothing to bring forth that sickness. Tonight there will be a huge pagan ritual to celebrate the coming of Spring before my troupe enters the stage. It is a very personal blessing. I have come a long, long way since that time. My spirit, mind, and body are much stronger, and I will use this time tonight as my own celebration of the work I have done to get here.

My name is Joan McMillan and this blog is, as Emily Dickinson says, "my letter to the world." I am currently working on a nonfiction book about the murder of a young woman, Asha Veil, born Joanna Dragunowicz, and her unborn daughter, Anina, on September 9, 2006. My book is meant to honor her life and illuminate the need to create a safer world for women and children.
